Awesome Stuff I Found Online This Week and Wanted to Share

September 17, 2011

I find so much awesome stuff on the web every week – much of it gets shared on Facebook and/or Twitter, but I thought it might be a good idea to collect the things I find each week and share them with you all in one place (don’t worry, I won’t stop sharing elsewhere, too). I asked on Facebook last week what I should call this segment and got a lot of great ideas, but I’m still not sure yet so feel free to chime in here or there if you have any ideas. So without further ado…  Awesome Stuff I Found Online This Week and Wanted to Share.

~Stuff I pinned for you on my TIAW board. (Awesome)
~Virginia went a weekend without mirrors. (Interesting)
~While this isn’t exactly breaking news 11 years later, I think I love Jamie Lee Curtis. (Inspiring)
~”…Live with passion. Live with intention. Live healthy. Live with no regrets. Live Sincerely.” (Heartbreaking)
~”Big boobs are like giant purses you can never put down.” (Hilarious)
~Honestly, this isn’t the first story like this I’ve heard about Southwest. (Infuriating)
~Oh, but, look, she updated. Will you join her? (Awesome)
~”We can only talk if you’re going to be emotional.” (Important)
~This lady mocks what she felt was an insulting tone in an American Apparel contest. You can read more, including what happened after she won the contest here. (Infuriating and also hilarious)
~This? IS AWESOME. (Super duper awesome)

A year of BlogHer’s Own Your Beauty has come to an end. If you missed it, you can still catch up – they’ll leave all the posts up. But last month we wrote our final posts, wrapping up all we’d learned this year. I’ve been on this path towards loving my body and my whole self since I was around eight or nine years old. Working on SOAM for the past five years really accelerated my progress, and working on Own Your Beauty this past year pretty much exploded it. My conclusion is that we have to stick together and always keep the conversation going, because we are so much stronger when we share our wisdom. You can see Karen’s wrap-up video here, my last post here (and if that last line is overly cheesy, just know that it’s a Doctor who quote which makes it less cheesy, but more nerdy), and Caitlin’s here.

One more thing…  Another one from Virginia (who went a weekend without mirrors). I was so disappointed to see Carrie Fisher as spokeswoman for Jenny Craig. Princess Leia is one of the most awesome role models for girls and one of a very few princesses my nine-year-old daughter (who discovered her inner feminist last year) will tolerate at all. I realize a person isn’t the character they play, and I also realize it’s not Carrie’s responsibility to uphold Leia’s personality. But I still felt a pang of loss when I saw the first commercial, and I hope my daughter doesn’t have to feel the stab of disappointment I did. Anyway, Virgina’s post has a totally different angle, and a really valid point, and is really worth reading and passing along.

Beautiful or Emaciated?

[Rosario] Dawson who appears on the August cover discussed industry-wide pressures to maintain an ideal body type.  After losing weight to play a drug addict dying of HIV/AIDS in the 2005 film “Rent,” she was stunned to hear compliments about her  figure. “I remember everyone asking what did you do to get so thin? You looked great,” Dawson recalled. “I looked emaciated.”

I think I love her.  Read more here.

And please forgive the phoned-in entries.  I’m almost back on track to provide my full self for this website. In the mean time I’ll try to post good stuff at Facebook and on Pinterest.

New Fun Internet Toy!

August 26, 2011

I’m slowly starting to get back in the saddle. Things got dark there for awhile and I was barely able to do the minimum required to live let alone finding time/energy to work. But thanks to some herbs and pokes from my acupuncturist, I’m feeling much better and, I think, maybe ready to slowly start working on this site again. Thanks for being patient with me.

I have a couple of entries submitted and ready to go, I want to keep working on the playlist, and I’m hoping to put together a weekly summary of relevant blog posts, articles and other internetty goodness each week.

But for now I’ve started a pin board at Pinterest focusing on things I think are relevant to TIAW. Do you have a similar pin board? Let me know so I can follow you.
