~This post at Eat the Damn Cake (I think Bethany shared this one with me?) is so well written that I can’t pick just one quote to share with you. It’s heartbreaking and makes me so glad I live in America where I know better and where I can raise my daughter knowing better than to become one of these girl models. I hope someone saves those girls from that life soon (and saves the rest of us in the process).
~And THAT article linked me to this one all about Awkward Beauty. YES. There is an image that goes around sometimes that says, “I don’t need to flirt. I will seduce you with my awkwardness.” Love that.
~Back to models. This article (which seems to have a misleading headline? or am I crazy?) says a Victoria’s Secret model is at risk of losing her job because she is too skinny.
~This is a great article with a lot of good advice about how to be comfortable with your body. I agree with all her points. Now get to work on this.
~In particular on that last one, make sure you watch the video at the end. It reminds me a lot of Fifty Nude Women. I’m not sure if that link if blocked for everyone right now, or if it’s just because I’m sitting here at the Toyota Lot waiting for my car’s oil to be changed. It’s blocked for – get this – nudity. Muhahahaha! Anyway, hope it works for you because that movie is incredible. If you can buy a copy of Fifty Nude Women, please do. If you’re local to me, I have a copy I can show, so if you want to get some girlfriends together Tupperware Party-style, and watch it, drop me an email.
Have a good Thursday, everyone!

So. Um. You might notice that it’s not, technically, September 13th anymore. I got a little sidetracked last week, I guess. School’s back in session which makes us extra busy and I’m still working on a routine. Sorry for the lateness, but at least this way you get two Awesomes this week.

~Why the slut-shaming of Kristen Stewart matters for young women. This is the best line in an article chock full of wisdom: “Chris Brown can publicly beat the hell out of his girlfriend but still be played on the radio and win Grammys. However, if you ever cheat on your boyfriend, your life is over and no one will ever want to be associated with you.”
~A girl quarterback? Hell yeah.
~Just another reason to love Patrick Stewart.
~Taylor Swift mascara ad has been banned for, um, photoshopping her eyelashes. Huh. Can’t imagine why. (And this apparently happened last year. But I don’t think I shared it here…?)

~This article about a doctor who no longer accepts patients who weight over 200 pounds is full of brain-exploding little gems like, “The problem with obesity is it has become socially acceptable,” and, “But I can’t charge double for an obese patient [the way airlines do].”
~Luckily this article has some good thoughts on the subject.
~I used to like to read Twilight and watch the movies. Not because I thought they were, like, good literature or Oscar-quality or anything. I liked them for the same reasons I like The Day After Tomorrow or Volcano. But, despite my enjoyment of it’s flaws, I found the whole Twilight phenomenon to be disturbing. What sorts of lessons does it teach girls? But then Fifty Shades of Grey came along. What started out as Twilight fanfiction has created another pop culture phenomenon which is equally as disturbing. Here’s an article arguing that the story is a poor cover of child pornography.
~Life with Crohn’s Disease. Funny how we forget that bodies serve a function that’s not directly related to looking a certain way. And when your body doesn’t serve it’s many functions in one way or several, it requires some rethinking.
~Or how about when your brain doesn’t fulfill its function?
