Weekly Awesome 5.24

~Stuff I pinned on my TIAW, Wisdom, and Stuff That’s Wrong boards.
~Fatkini gallery. More beautiful women of all sizes (truly all sizes, not all were fat), not afraid to be amazing in a bikini.
~Way to go, Jimmy Carter!
~A few awesome things about being disabled.
~While I, personally, might replace “Satan” with “the Patriarchy”, this lady and I agree on what body image should be.
~An insider’s story about The Biggest Loser. If you read one link today, make it this one. And pass it on. This show is disgusting at best, highly dangerous from a technical point of view, and, honestly, just as dangerous for our culture to buy the myth that fat = bad. Read this.

I read the article on TBL. I watched the entire most recent season (that was the first time I’d ever watched it). I guess I have to say that I’m not entirely surprised…because the weight loss numbers seemed too good to be true (and it always bugged me that the ONLY measure of success was weight loss). The thing I found inspiring about the show wasn’t the weight loss – it was seeing contestants seem to get excited about realizing they could do things they didn’t know they could do (starting with physical things, but how that translated to an overall confidence)…and finding power in that. I’m really disappointed to hear that the contestants were treated so poorly.
